African cities have been the fastest growing cities in the world;This international conference, by  focusing on the (historical) identity, the contemporary position in a global context, and the future of the African city centre,will explore possibilities,frameworks and directions in which the African city center can position itself.
The many contributors including Joe Osae – Addo, Jose Forjaz, Abdumaliq Simone, Heinrich Wolff, Dick van Gameren and Nnamdi Elleh,will share their take on where we are going to be in the next decades taking in consideration all disciplines of urban design such as : landscape, housing design, building technology, conservation, architectural sociology, planning, real estate, housing management, anthropology and art

The Lagos Habitat 2001 project main objectives are :

-Tomodernize extant regulations towards the transformation of Lagos into Africa’s model mega city;-

To halt the increasing frequency of building collapse in Lagos;

-To establish a building control system to minimize the incidence of various building defects arising from bad design, inferior materials and construction leading to fire and health hazards;

-To create processes and institutions for effective enforcement of the regulations;

-To eradicate uncontrolled development due to fast-paced growth in the state;

-The reduction of slums towards attainment of the Millennium Development Goals and saving the unnecessary cost of relocating slum dwellers;

-To mitigate security threats posed by several abandoned buildings in the state;

-To address the prevalent loss of skills amongst building professionals due to lack of statutory certification and continuous education;

-To enforce structured accreditation procedures for workmen;

-To formulate a sustainable physical planning and urban development policy for Lagos State;
